Assistant professor at the Department of International Relations and European Studies at the Faculty of Social Studies MU, where he has served since the institution was founded. After completing his master’s studies in political science at the Faculty of Arts MU in 1996, he worked as an independent translator specializing in the areas of political science and the humanities. In September 1997 he took on the job of academic assistant at the Department of Social Trends at FSS MU, where he served until December 1998. After a short interlude as an independent translator he became assistant professor at the Department of Political Science FSS MU in September 1999, from which he moved to the Department of International Relations and European Studies FSS MU. In recent years he has lectured in Poland, Germany, and the United States.
He is author of the monograph Stranický systém České republiky. Politické strany a jejich vývoj 1989-1998 [The Party System in the Czech Republic: Political Parties and their development (2005), co-author of the monograph Komunismus v České republice [Communism in the Czech Republic] (with J. Holzer, M. Mareš, and P. Fiala, 2000), editor or co-editor of five collected volumes, and author or co-author of over forty specialized texts in domestic and international journals and volumes. Since September 2003 he has been on the editorial board of the journal Mezinárodní politika. In the area of education he focuses on theory of international relations, especially the developments of the last twenty years; in the area of research he specializes in the party system of the Czech Republic and party systems in general.
Besides his activities at the FSS MU he has also worked as a translator; his published work includes over ten book titles (for example History of Christianity by Paul Johnson), and over 50 academic articles. Since 2000 he has been a specialist at the independent Center for the Study of Democracy and Culture in Brno, where he serves as project manager and coordinator for international cooperation.
