Since the founding of the department its personnel have been engaged in primary political science research. Recent projects sponsored by the Grant Agency Czech Republic include Adaptation of NATO (implementer Zdeněk Kříž, 2004 – 2006), Creation and Development of the Strategy of Containment in American Foreign Policy 1945 – 1953 (implementer Petr Suchý, 2003 – 2005); and sponsored by the Jan Hus Education Foundation, Interdisciplinary Concept of Democracy (co-implementer Vít Hloušek, 2002 – 2004). The department also takes part in projects supported by the European Union, especially under the European Commission’s Jean Monnet Project.
Members of the department are currently taking part in a number of other important academic and research projects. The main research focus of the department is the project of the Czech Republic Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs Political actors in the process of Europeanization and internationalization of the political environment in the CR (implementer Petr Fiala, co-implementers Markéta Pitrová, Vít Hloušek, Petr Suchý, Pavel Pšeja, 2004 – 2009). Department personnel are also participating in the research focus of the Ministry of Education, Youth, and Physical Fitness Political Parties and Representation of Interests in Contemporary European Democracies (Petr Fiala, Vít Hloušek, Petr Kaniok, 2004 – 2009), the research platform of which is the Institute for Comparative Political Research. Another current research project is the Academy of Science Grant Agency project Political Systems in Democratic Countries and their Transformation at the Beginning of the 21st Century (co-implementer Vít Hloušek, 2008 – 2010).
