Studied history and political science at the Faculty of Arts and Faculty of Social Studies at Masaryk University (1995-2000). In 2000-2003 he earned his doctorate in political science at the Faculty of Social Studies, Masaryk University. In 2007 he became associate professor in the field of political science. He has served at the Department of International Relations and European Studies FSS MU since 2002. Since 2005 he has also served at the Institute for Comparative Political Research FSS MU. He specializes in the problems of comparative political science, especially comparison of political and party systems in Europe, contemporary history, and the shaping and development of modern mass politics in Central Europe. His teaching work focuses on comparative political science and contemporary European political history. He is author of a number of articles in professional magazines and volumes, editor of several publications, author of the monograph Konflikt versus konsensus. Konfliktní linie, politické strany a stranické systémy v Rakousku, 1860-2006 [Conflict versus Consensus: Cleavages, political parties, and party systems in Austria 1860-2006] (Brno 2008) and co-author of the monographs Origin, Ideology and Transformation of Political Parties. East-Central and Western Europe Compared (with L. Kopeček, Aldershot 2010), Politické strany moderní Evropy. Analýza stranicko-politických systémů [Political Parties in Modern Europe: Analysis of political party systems (with M. Strmiska, L. Kopeček, and R. Chytilk, Prague 2005), Konfliktní demokracie. Moderní masová politika ve střední Evropě [Conflict Democracy: Modern mass politics in Central Europe] (with L. Kopeček, Brno 2004) and Politický systém českých zemí 1848-1989 [The Political System in the Czech Lands 1848-1989] (with S. Balík, J. Holzer, and J. Šedo, Brno 2003). He is chief editor of Politologický časopis [Czech Journal of Political Science] and member of the editorial board of Politologická revue [Czech Revue of Political Science] and Středoevropské politické studie [Central European Political Science Review].
