Doc. PhDr. Břetislav Dančák, Ph.D.

Břetislav Dančák

Vice-dean for foreign relations at the Faculty of Social Studies MU, assistant professor at the Department of International Relations and European Studies at the Faculty of Social Studies MU (since 2002), and director of the International Institute of Political Science, Masaryk University (since 2004). .

His research focuses on American foreign policy after the end of the Cold War, with emphasis on the priorities of the USA in Central and Eastern Europe in relation to political developments in the Central European countries, and their internal political and foreign policy aspects. Special focus on the Visegrad group and analysis of relations among these countries, and their membership in the European Union and the North Atlantic alliance. He has published many articles, studies, and analyses in the Czech Republic and abroad, taken part as author and editor in a number of book titles: Zahraniční politika politických stran v České republice, Maďarsku, Polsku a na Slovensku [Foreign Policies of Political Parties in the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, and Slovakia (author and editor with M. Mareš, 2000), Národnostní politika v postkomunistických zemích [Ethnic Politics in the Post-Communist Countries] (author and editor with P. Fiala, 2000), Nacionalistické politické strany v Evropě [Nationalist Political Parties in Europe] (author and editor with P. Fiala, 1999), Pobaltí v transformaci –  politický vývoj Estonska, Litvy a Lotyšska [The Baltic in Transformation – Political development of Estonia, Lithuania, and Latvia] (author and editor, 1999), Integrační pokusy ve středoevropském prostoru I., II. [Attempts at Integration in Central Europe I., II.] (author and editor, 1998, 1999).

Besides his lecture activity at the Faculty of Social Studies MU, he regularly lectures abroad, and takes part in international conferences and seminars.

In the 2003-2004 academic year he was a Fulbright Visiting Scholar at Columbia University in New York, where he carried out research on American foreign policy in the 1990s.

He is member of several academic commissions and councils: the Czech Euro-Atlantic Council, the Czech Committee for Central and East European Studies of the Academy of Sciences, Czech Republic, the Academic Council at the Institute for Strategic Studies, where in 2002 – 2004 he served as Executive Director of the East European Summer School Club.
